SEARCH ENGINES : A SHORT FACT FILE

 A search engine is a designed to search for information on the World Wide Web and FTP servers.The search results are generally presented in a list of results and are often called hits. At present,Popular  search engines are Google, Yahoo etc.

The history o search engine begins from Archie.it was the first tool used or searching on internet.  It was created in 1990 by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan and J. Peter Deutsch.Then came Gropher (1991) and  Veronica and Jughead  followed by Gropher.

W3Catalog, written by Oscar Nierstrasz  is released to the world. It is the world's first web search engine.(1993) In the same year 1993 ALIWEB  by Martijn Koster, made some advance  in search engine history.

Then time to time the advanced the search engine  steady and fast.As the result of this development we use  today varius search engines such as Google, yahoo etc.

Google Search is the most-used search engine on the world wide web and developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997.

2. Yahoo

The secondnd largest search engine on the web and it  was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994 .

3. Bing

Bing was developed by Microsoft in 2009. It known previously as Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search).

4. Ask

Ask.com (originally known as Ask Jeeves) is a question answering-focused web search engine founded in 1996 by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen.

5.AOL Search

AOL Inc. (previously known as America Online) founded in 1985 by  Jim Kimsey.

6.WebCrawler

WebCrawler  is a metasearch engine that blends the top search results from GoogleSearch and Yahoo Search. It went live on April 20, 1994 and was created by Brian Pinkerton  .WebCrawler was the first Web search engineto provide full text search.

7.Lycos

 It  is a search engine and web portal established in 1994.

8.HotBot

It  is a web search engine currently owned by Lycos. It was launched in May 1996 by Wired magazine.

It  is a metasearch engine which provides results from leading search engines.

10. AltaVista

 Altavista was an early web search engine and founded in 1995.later it was takeover by yahoo in 2003 and now Altavista redirects to yahoo.
