NATIONAL FLAG OF INDIA



A horizontal tricolour of saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. In the centre is a navy blue wheel with twenty-four spokes, known as the Ashoka Chakra(this adopted from pillars of ashok at saranath) and also known as dharma chakra).

India’s tricolour flag recognized by constituent assembly on july 22,1947. Pingali Venkayya  was the designer of the Indian national flag.Only khadi cloth used to made national flag.National flag of india is first time used by Madam Bhikaji Cama( known as mother of Indian revolution) at the Second Socialist International Meeting in Stuttgart in 1907.India’s new flag code adopted in January 26,2002.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad worked as the head of  ad hoc committee to select national flag appointed by constituent assembly on 23  june 1947 and Constituent assembly adopted  national flag on 22  july 1947.
There are different interpretation on colour of national flag , generally interpret as The top saffron colour, indicates the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The green shows the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.

The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three(2:3). The stages through which the Flags are being manufactured in nine diffferet size. Biggest size is 6300 mm length and 4200 mm width and smallest size is 150 mm length and 100 mm width.

'Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangh (Federation),  Hubli, is the only centre to produce the national flags of all sizes under BIS certification.

  •    Sister Nivedita ( Margaret Elizabeth Noble) , an Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda, was the first person to conceive the idea of National Flag for India. 
  • The Indian flag code is a set of laws that govern the usage of the Flag of India. Flag Code of India,2002 comes into effect from January 26, 2002. Earlier provisions made of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950  and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 .
  • Nine standard sizes of the flag are specified by law

  • The first public flag hoisting ceremony was held at the war Memorial in Prince’s Park near India Gate, on the afternoon of August 15, 1947.
  • The Indian national flag was hoisted on Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world, on May 29 1953, along with the Union Jack and the Nepalese National flag.
  •  In 1971, the Indian flag, went into space on board Apollo-15. It flew into space as a medallion on the spacesuit worn by Cosmonaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, during the Indo-Soviet joint space flight in April 1984.   
  • On January 9 1982, the first Indian Antarctica Expedition planted the first Indian flag over Dakshin Gangotri. It was hoisted for the first time on the South Pole on January 17, 1989, by Colonel J.K. Bajaj.
