LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere of the Earth may be divided into several distinct layers.

 Troposphere

The layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth is the troposphere. where all weather takes place. The tropopause is the boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere.
Stratosphere
Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, where air flow is mostly horizontal. Stratopause is the boundary between the Mesosphere and stratosphere. The earth's ozone layer is located in the stratosphere. Ozone, a form of oxygen, is crucial to our survival; this layer absorbs a lot of ultraviolet solar energy.

Mesosphere

From about 35 to 50 miles above the surface of the earth lies the mesosphere. Mesopause is the boundary between the Mesosphere and thermosphere.

Thermosphere

The thermosphere is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. The boundary between the thermosphere and the exosphere above it is called the thermopause. Much of the X-ray and UV radiation from the Sun is absorbed in the thermosphere. The International Space Station orbits in this layer.
Exosphere
The exosphere is the uppermost region of Earth's atmosphere. It is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium. Thermopause is the boundary between the   Exosphere and thermosphere.
